Between the Stops by Sandy Toksvig
Rather than a story starting at childhood and following her life, each chapter has stories from all ages and experiences. This gives the book a great flow and feels like chatting with a friend.
She shines a light on the struggles of being a woman in the television industry, Harvey Weinstein also gets a brief mention, just enough to make your stomach turn.
From stories of almost being kicked out of Cambridge college for being a lesbian, to almost getting arrested until the officers recognised her as 'Sandy from the bake off'. This book is Full of funny, uplifting, empowering and heartwarming tales, a really good read.
Windswept And Interesting by Billy Connolly. A humorous read (it does make you snort with laughter at points!) it is also touching and thought provoking. Like Sandy Toksvig, the chapters have stories from all ages and experiences. From being abused as a child by his Dad and his Aunt through being in a band with Gerry Rafferty and feeling “as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit” when he was the opening act for Elton John in the U.S. to appearing alongside the likes of Lauren Bacall, Angie Dickinson and Sting on Parkinson. This book is written exactly as Billy would speak so you can hear his Glaswegian voice in your head as you read it. Such a flowing, easy read.
Reasons To Stay Alive by Matt Haig
Matt was living an hedonistic life in Ibiza, until he wasn't. His story of how he came back from the brink...very slowly. He addresses a variety of everyday issues faced by those suffering with anxiety, depression and other psychological issues...even a trip to the corner shop in Newark was a source of paralysing terror.
His solutions were personal to him and much wider than the medical model of medication, but he encourages individuals to find what works for them
I loved the last chapter "Things I have enjoyed since the time I thought I would never enjoy anything again" so beautiful and real and so many wise words and observations
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby A small powerhouse of feelings, emotions & trauma. No conclusion or “ happy” ending but as an ex nurse I found its intensity and honesty amazing. Loved it. Challenging but rewarding to really feel what someone is experiencing.
On Trying to Keep Still by Jenni Diski to give away. It’s part travel writing, part memoir and exploration of her inner self. She was a wonderful woman writer….
A Very Elusive Woman by Lucy Worsley
Lucy Worsley examines Agatha Christie’s life chronologically. The narrative is lively and interesting and gives a fascinating historical insight into her life and work. She spent her life pretending that she was an ordinary housewife when in fact the reality was something completely different. Very entertaining and written with great enthusiasm. Reading this biography made me want to read more Christie novels.
