Play Park Improvements 2021-2025 The plan The reality Abbey Park Community Association (APCA) are so pleased with the improvements the playground on Abbey Park and we hope you are too.. Phase 1 of improvements have now taken place and we are looking at Phase 2 along side Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) officers. Subject to funding there is the potential for a Phase 2 which could include a MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) with low level football goals on the flat area between the trees/bank and the rear of the houses on Waltham Close - see drawing below. This Phase 2 would eventually incorporate landscape planting so the views from the nearby houses remain green and pleasant. Early in 2021 APCA discussed the potential for adult outdoor gym equipment on the park. It's been a long time in the planning but this continues to move forward and we hope to bring you some news either towards the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025. Two benches have been installed on the park during 2024 and are enjoyed by many people. They really have been a fabulous addition. See stock photo below. February 2025 APCA volunteers will be installing a willow weave similar to the one in West Bridgford Park. It will be positioned between the play park and the nature trail providing a natural link between the two area. Smaller than the one in the park, it will need to establish itself, so we ask that you and your children respect this. Comments and ideas are always welcome and you can send them to us via the following email: abbeypark.ng@gmail.com Please click on the logo below to open up the downloadable PDF Plan of the Masterplan shown above. • Major Oak Sapling | Abbey Park Community Association | West Bridgford

Abbey Parks very own Major Oak Sapling The ceremony to mark the planting of the Major Oak sapling on Abbey Park and to formally ‘welcome’ the fruit trees planted last winter was held 23rd February 2022. Where the Major of Rushcliffe, local schoolchildren and other Abbey Park residents were at the planting. Izi Banton, Estates and Conservation Manager for RSPB Sherwood Forest said: “There are Major Oak saplings which have been planted in locations right around the world, so we know that its offspring will be growing and generating their own acorns and saplings for centuries to come and I am delighted that we have been able to donate this one to a community in our own county, to stand alongside other. Nottinghamshire species which have been so carefully selected for Abbey Park.” The sapling will be a significant addition to the recent planting on Abbey Park. Pupils from Edmund Campion Primary School will be involved in the planting of the Oak, and in the care of the fruit trees, and so encouraged to learn about their positive environmental impact and their Nottinghamshire history. Surrounded by stakes and wire to protect it, it will be nursed along with several other fruit trees, by the children of St Edmund Campion School who have kindly agreed to adopt them. We hope to bring you photographs of them if and when permission is gained, but for now please enjoy some photos of the day and the tree planting. • Tree Planting for Future Generations | Abbey Park Nottm

Tree Planting Streetwise have now started planting to replace the beautiful Ash Trees that were damaged by dieback. New Acers, Cherries and Red Oak are being planted and will be hopefully gracing our park in years to come. Thankfully, Streetwise has a contractor to water them every 3 weeks from March. However it should ideally be once a week. If you can help in any way to ensure they settle in and become well established, please email us at abbeypark.ng@gmail.com More discussions are underway with a view to planting a possible orchard and even a mini forest so watch this space!

  • Abbey Park Orchard | Abbey Park Nottm

Abbey Park Orchard A few months ago we floated the idea of a community orchard on Abbey Park. We are looking to push forward with the project and we would love get your comments on the project. We are also looking for local people to ‘adopt’ one of the trees to make sure they are properly watered during really dry periods. we now have two plans showing a maximum of 20 trees. Can we get 20 people to adopt a tree? You can comment on here or also send an email to abbeypark.ng@gmail.com . The plans are also available on the notice board and Abbey Park Local Facebook Group Thank you to all those who took time to submit comments on the consultation. They are currently being collated and we hope to have news on the Orchard soon. Following on from the suggestions of an alternative site next to the bus turning circle I have produced an alternative layout for this site as well. I have an open mind about which site might be most appropriate. I can see pros and cons in each. Please feel free to comment on this alternative proposal via email to the Community Association. • Orchard & Tree Planting | Abbey Park Community Association | West Bridgford

Abbey Park Orchards It's been a long time coming with planning initially starting way back during lockdown, but our orchards are now coming to fruition with two areas being planted today (18th November 2020). All the committee have been a part of the planning, but Lesley Morris & Simon Middlecote have taken the lead with grant applications and layouts. There are two separate areas, the lower ground opposite the play park and on the edge of the allotments now have beautiful ornamental cherry trees of mixed varieties while the higher orchard contains a mixture of fruit trees including Bramley Apple, Flowering Crab Apple and Damson Trees. Local residents have adopted some of the trees and have agreed to help tend them until they are fully established. If you would like to adopt a tree, please contact us at abbeypark.ng@gmail.com So it begins... James from Streetwise planting one of the first ornamental cherry trees Checking the layout Lesley Morris double checks the layout with James and Mark from Streetwise Project Name Simon, Ruth & Lesley at the beginning of the work next to the Alllotments. The look of satisfaction Lesley & Simon posing at the Fruit Tree Orchard Site. Merryweather Damson Double staked, we hope these trees will thrive and be enjoyed by all who visit the park. John Downie - Flowering Crab Apple Already baring fruit, this tree is looking gorgeous and will certainly bring colour to the area. Newtons Apple Tree Planted on 23rd November this Newtons Apple Tree is sure to be a winner. Look, it's even planted an apple on top of someones head! Old Bess Apple Tree Planted at the same time and not as well know as Newtons Apple, Old Bess is a fine addition to our growing orchard. Horse Chestnut Tree Planting Many moons ago, one of our members children planted Horse Chestnut Tree. It has been potbound for some time and we felt it was only right to give this wonderful tree a special place all of its own. Planted on the top of the field, Catherine Bailey can now enjoy watching it grow and spread its branches. Of course, we did have to gain permission from RBC's Tom Pettit.
