A once proud building, the Pumping Station was sadly demolished before we could object to its demise. Sadly, this year saw the demolition of one of the oldest buildings in West Bridgford. Our very own Abbey Road Pumping Station , to make way for much needed new housing. Incredibly, the plans of the pumping station were found in a skip! The drawings, which date from 1901, revealed the station at the Abbey Road depot was built in 1886 and it is hoped that they will be sent to the County Archives for safe storage as they show how West Bridgford has developed over time, having housed a pumping station, a bus depot, a council refuse depot and even a mortuary! The depot site actually featured a number of other historic structures that were built slightly after 1900/1901. The whole development was built to treat the refuse of Bridgford which included a destructor, that burnt solid waste. The clinker from that was then used under the roads of West Bridgford. There were stables and cart sheds, cottages for on-site staff and offices, and the site dealt with the waste and refuse of the people and businesses of Bridgford. Abbey Park Residents Association’s - Simon Middlecote, liaised with Rushcliffe Borough Councillors in the hope that the pumping station could at least be saved and repurposed as a community hub, but unfortunately, this was not to be. Community Gathering July 2025 We can't quite believe that this was our fourth Community Gathering! We were so grateful that the weather behaved. After having had a week of extremely high temperatures almost hitting 30, we were concerned that the heat would be too much for everyone or that heavy rain might spoil the event. Plenty of plants and books were exchanged and the children loved having their faces painted and henna tatoos done. New activities this year were Tug-O-War and Splat the Rat, both of which went down a storm. in the quite corner children were able to take part in colouring and painting rocks for Abbey the Adder (to be found at the top of Back Alley. Bike-works were able to provide many residents with a quick service (for free) and the Ice cream man was as busy as usual. We were thrilled that the Fire Brigade were able to take time out to visit us and let the children experience being in their fire engine. With chairs provided by the committee some residents were able to sit and enjoy a fun afternoon while other brought their blankets along with picnics. Thank you to all those who were able to make it an enjoyable time. Our primary aim is to bring the community together. Any monies raised go to funding the Liability Insurance (required by law) to enable this and all the other events organised by the committee.

Streetwise have enabled us to plant some of the orchard trees, but others we have done ourselves. Take a look at how things are progressing. Abbey Park Orchards It's been a long time coming with planning initially starting way back during lockdown, but our orchards are now coming to fruition with two areas being planted today (18th November 2020). All the committee have been a part of the planning, but Lesley Morris & Simon Middlecote have taken the lead with grant applications and layouts. There are two separate areas, the lower ground opposite the play park and on the edge of the allotments now have beautiful ornamental cherry trees of mixed varieties while the higher orchard contains a mixture of fruit trees including Bramley Apple, Flowering Crab Apple and Damson Trees. Local residents have adopted some of the trees and have agreed to help tend them until they are fully established. John Downie - Flowering Crab Apple Already baring fruit, this tree is looking gorgeous and will certainly bring colour to the area. Newtons Apple Tree Planted on 23rd November this Newtons Apple Tree is sure to be a winner. Look, it's even planted an apple on top of someones head! Old Bess Apple Tree Planted at the same time and not as well know as Newtons Apple, Old Bess is a fine addition to our growing orchard.
