Abbey Park Community Association presents it's 2nd Community Gathering on the field. Community Gathering 10th September 2023 Another fantastic afternoon was had on our second Community Gathering. It's always great to see people coming together enjoying the stalls and activities. no matter what age. A massive thank you to all on the committee and everyone else who helped organise the event, but our very special thanks go to Nell, Aiya & Emie! As thunderstorms were forecast we started a little earlier than planned . Thankfully the brief rain we had didn't stop to much of the fun. We hope you all enjoyed the afternoon!

We want our field to grow and become an even more beautiful place to be. Tree Planting Streetwise have now started planting to replace the beautiful Ash Trees that were damaged by dieback. New Acers, Cherries and Red Oak are being planted and will be hopefully gracing our park in years to come. Thankfully, Streetwise has a contractor to water them every 3 weeks from March. However it should ideally be once a week. If you can help in any way to ensure they settle in and become well established, please email us at abbeypark.ng@gmail.com More discussions are underway with a view to planting a possible orchard and even a mini forest so watch this space!

Back Local Charitable Giving & Recycling Opportunities Go Baby (Nottingham’s First Baby Bank) The Baby Bank is in The Meadows on the precinct near the Co-Op and you can park at the back entrance for free. It’s in the Digitall Prints shop and the lady who runs it is called Natasha. Opening times are currently Monday and Wednesday 12-2pm. They accept good quality donations for children 0-5 years (except mattresses and car seats .) Tupperware/bottles - sent to Terracycle - will be raising money of Abbey Road Primary School Marigold gloves - as above Cheese wrappers - as above (these can be recycled in the soft plastic recycling but if they can raise money, why not!) Bottles tops - I take these to Dove Cottage hospice who make money from them Men’s Toiletries Hayward House palliative care based at Nottingham City hospital are always in need of men’s toiletries . Holme Lodge Care Home Holme Lodge are always looking for donations of towels, flannels, toiletries, mugs, cutlery and single bedding. Although no longer a charity, donations help them to use their limited resources to buy fun things for the residents. Any donations can be left in the porch. 1 Julian Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham NG2 5AQ The Meadows Foodbank The Meadows Foodbank has been chosen recently to benefit from the Co-op Local Community Fund. They are raising funds to set up a community fridge to store more of the fresh surplus food they receive, as they would like to add fruit and veg to food parcels to increase their nutritional value. Please consider buying a Co-op membership card for just £1 and selecting The Meadows Foodbank on the Co-op website or app as your cause to receive funding towards their fresh food initiative. It’s quick and easy to set up and will make a big difference! You might also wish to join The Meadows Foodbank Facebook page to keep up-to-date with how you can help. Stamps & Books Morrisons in Gamston are currently collecting good quality adult and children’s books to sell to raise funds for children’s charity Clic Sargent. They can be dropped off for attention of Kelly, who is the Community Champion (and awesome!) Plastic Takeaway Tubs - Drop of at 30 Newstead Drive The Friary Homeless Charity on Musters Road in West Bridgford need plastic takeaway tubs for handing out food. They sterilise them on arrival but please wash them and ideally connect them to their matching lid (with an elastic band if you’ve got them.) Contact lenses & Toothpaste Recycling Find this lovely lady’s Facebook page, Tree's Homemade Terracycle Recycling Depo https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057255827404 , as she has kindly set up recycling bins for contact lens stuff and RG Hygiene plastic wallets. Tree opens up her bins periodically at her Lady Bay home for people to deposit their donations into for recycling. Please check carefully what can and cannot be recycled in this way, so as not to contaminate the bins. Abbey Circus Air Raid Shelter Walk to Abbey Circus to view the triangle of land which was left to the local residents to enjoy and you will find more than just a grass. For many years the patch of land was off limits until local residents fought for it to be reopened. Today there are access gates, new fencing, planters and, importantly, you will find its WW2 air raid shelter, which is still in existence today. It was earmarked for demolition in 1979, the Cold War drew to a close and the 67 ft shelter (B34TYB) was mothballed but recently has been protected and is now considered to be a site of Special Scientific Interest. A couple of years ago, Chris Reynolds, Professor of Contemporary European History and Memory Studies at Nottingham Trent University took on the project to restore and reopen the shelter. Thanks to him school children now visit to learn about the war effort and the fascinating local history. The general public are also able to visit.
